“One Night in Bangkok” by Murray Head – Music Review

What even is this song?

“One Night in Bangkok” is the weirdest song ever rapped by Murray Head in 1984. It was part of the musical Chess.

The song is about chess. In Bangkok. Go figure.

The beat of the song is good, and has been remixed and sampled quite a bit. The lyrics are also quite easy to memorize. I once had to stop myself from writing “Bangkok, oriental city, and the city don’t know what the city is getting” on my geography test.

The song just name drops stereotypes about Bangkok left and right. It’s probably racist, and Thailand actually banned the song, so yeah.

This really is one of those things that could only exist in the 1980s.

Grade: C+
