“Obsession” by Animotion – 80s Music Review

Desperate? Try this!

1984’s “Obsession” by Animotion is so 80s its not even funny.

It’s not funny because it’s hilarious.

I’m not going to talk about the bad 1980s music video. I’m not going to talk about cheesy graphics and weird Roman stuff. I’m going to focus on the song.

Lyrically, the song is desperate. The entire song has the two singers (male and female) singing about the other being their obsession, with the line “who do you want me to be to make you sleep with me?”

In fact, the song is full of cheesy one liners. I personally enjoy “Like a butterfly, a wild butterfly, I will collect you and capture you.” Brilliant!

Let’s not forget “My fantasies have turned to madness, and now my goodness has turned to badness.”

This is the 80s. There’s no other way to explain this song.

Musically, it’s an electric guitar and a whole lotta synth.

For all its ridiculousness, it’s actually a very good song. I’m surprised I haven’t reviewed it sooner.

Grade: B
