“Lies” Thompson Twins Review

“Cleopatra died for Egypt: what a waste of time.”

Thompson Twins’ “Lies” from 1982 is so 80s and so odd.

The song is about the singer’s partner lying to him, probably cheating on him. It’s a very angry song, with the chorus literally screaming “lies lies lies yeah” over an over.

Musically, the song is a quirky synth piece with weird synth-warped samples whenever they mention a place (that Chinese restaurant tune everyone thinks of when they think of Asia plays twice in this song).

This is not meant to be a spectacular song. This is an odd breakup song. It’s mediocre, but New Wave got weird at times.

Grade: C
