Birding Niagara Falls State Park

An interesting fact of note, flock: Niagara Falls is designated an Important Bird Area by the Audubon Society.

This is a direct result of Niagara being a haven for not only waterfowl, but also songbirds, birds of prey, and just about everything else you can imagine.

In fact, every year, Birds On The Niagara celebrates peak birdwatching season in February. Of course, I decided to actually attempt birding now in March, when the avian selection is…a bit different.

Gulls: it’s always gulls.

We are rapidly approaching seagull nesting season, and tens of thousands of seagulls have descended upon Niagara Falls State Park in an attempt to secure their spot.

Luckily, there were also some songbirds along the trails, although they were visibly disappointed that I did not have food for them (mainly because of the signs every 10 feet that beg you not to feed the wildlife).

Of course, you can’t make it very far in Niagara Falls without being, ahem, greeted by our dear friends the Canadian Geese. While most people seem to have a genuine fear for their mortal lives when it comes to these birds, I once watched a four-year-old chase a gaggle of them clean across Prospect Point. Knowing now that these geese do feel fear, I’ve come to a respectable acquaintanceship with them: I will not chase them into the falls, and they will not Tonya Harding my kneecaps.

While the geese demand respect the same way that the seagulls demand attention, my personal favorite birds in Niagara are none other than the pigeons.

Spending their time on the Goat Island bridges, the pigeons are, without a doubt, absolutely stunning. I’m not joking: their elegance blends in perfectly with the falls (never though I’d call a pigeon “elegant”, but Niagara’s are something else).

I don’t know if the pigeons were intentionally there for a photoshoot, but they certainly were prepared for a photoshoot. Absolutely magnificent. They made the day worth it by a mile.

If you’re visiting Niagara Falls, remember to take a moment to look at the flora and fauna around you. There’s a reason this is a wonder of the world, and it’s not just because of the waterfall.
